Television is the Devil!

Of course television is not really the devil. I’m using hyperbole to make a point. Too much television can cause problems. So yesterday we started a new thing: less television!

I’m not sure the kids like it, but they’ll manage. In the long run we believe they will enjoy life more because of it. But, why less television? I can find at least ten positive results of less television. Maybe you can add some more.

  1. We talk to each other more.
  2. We play games together.
  3. Reading becomes more interesting.
  4. The attitudes of our children improve.
  5. Less fighting among the boys.
  6. We get to bed earlier! No more, just one more show.
  7. Our focus turns to real-life instead of fantasy.
  8. I have more time to work on my D.Min. Prospectus.
  9. The boys use their imaginations.
  10. Exercise!
  11. More time for important things, like blogging and building stilts.
  12. More energy.

The television can be a crutch for parents.  We let the boys sit still and watch a show so we can things done; it’s like pushing the “easy button.” It takes more parental effort to point a child to something more constructive. We realize this will be a challenging change. The floor will be messier (thanks, Lego!), and we will have to pause our day to make sure the backyard isn’t on fire. Speaking of the backyard, maybe this is a good time to build an obstacle course …
